My soul is satisfied.…..
Does that describe you? If you’re like me sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn’t. I find myself dissatisfied when I’m tired, & feeling anxious. When my expectations aren’t met I am faced with the challenge to call my feelings in line with what I know deep down in my soul. It can go either way. I can lay there at night and let my worry, anxiety and things out of my control take me under…. or I can praise God thank Him for His goodness and faithfulness and savor the joy He brings as I think on Him when I lay down.
Your bedroom, the place where you lay your body down to rest, is the place for you to experience your greatest renewal, refreshment & intimacy. Because we love Jesus like we do and our relationship with Him is our first priority we cconsider EVERYTHING and how it host His presence & cultivates our intimate relationship….. let’s pause here for a moment.
For 8 years I suffered with chronic migraine headaches. I lived in my bedroom. The walls were always painted a dark color, the windows had blackout coverings, no TV, phone, music, or people. It was in that isolated time that I learned some very important things that would shape my perspective when I was freed from the dark & isolated season.
Being alone and isolated can feel devastating. One might assume there is no intimacy available in being alone, but I’m here to testify that God comes close when we invite Him and we don’t have to have it all together. We just have to invite Him in. In sickness and in health, in marriage and in singleness, in wealth and in poverty we choose to feeds a life that we love even if we don’t like our circumstances. Why? Because we, who are born again believers in Jesus, KNOW that He is always present, faithful to work all things together for our good because we love Him & live for His pleasure. Soooo I can assure you that even when your heart is hurting, God is faithful & wants to be with you. He wants you to experience the love, peace, beauty & rest that you were created for.
Love’s deepest, richest and sweetest blessing come when your heart is set on Jesus and your mind is focused on Him. This is the relationship that we live for. Why do I make a point of this? I know that in a million years this will still be Truth, and your abundant life depends on it.
Where is the place in your home where you can spend time in God’s presence? It doesn’t have to be your bedroom, but you will find yourself wanting if you don’t meditate on God when you are laying down to rest and think on Him in the night.
One of the greatest things you can do for yourself is set your mind on Him, put Him first, and be intentional in all you do to make room for Him.
Over the years of working with many clients I found that the master bedroom is most often not a priority. Generally speaking it’s a room that “nobody” will see so the focus becomes the community rooms in the house. I hope that you will prayerfully consider making your bedroom a sanctuary for you to enjoy and discover a new level of beauaty, rest, renewal, & restoration.
Let’s work together to shift our perspective to one who sees and makes the most of the potential to make a heart dance, a body be restored and a mind to be refreshed.
In your bedroom I’d like for you to ask yourself a few questions:
- How do you currently feel when you go into your bedroom?
- What do you want to feel when you go in your bedroom?
- When you go in your bedroom what does it currently say?
- Ask yourself what do you want your bedroom to say?
I’m going to give you examples and how they guide me in making a decorating plan for my master bedroom. Let’s focus on your bedroom as we answer.
- I currently feel like my bedroom doesn’t matter how it looks because no one sees it but me
- When I go in my bedroom I want to feel like I’m on vacation and have a sense of rest & peace that takes me away.
- My bedroom currently says things are a mess…. I struggle to keep all these piles of stuff and clutter clear
- I want my bedroom to say come in, relax, and enjoy so that when I leave I find myself drawn to return.
Asking myself these questions help me to think through what needs to be processed as I make my decorating plan. It helps me put words to where I am and get focused on where I want to be.
The answers help me keep my heart fixed on my #1 relationship with Jesus. Because I am married, I share this room with the second most important person in the world so considering how he feels and what he needs is important too. And let’s not forget how desperately we need REST and this is the room for that. I’m not good at resting, and its incredibly important that I cultivate a place of rest & intimacy in my bedroom. So I find the more I love the way my bedroom looks and makes me feel the better the chances I am to be drawn in.
I start asking God to show me, point things out to me, open my mind to creative things. I keep my eyes open to what’s around me. I want to make it beautiful, intimate, and functional as well. Again, you can search Pinterest & Houzz for ideas or hire someone to help you. Regardless of where you get your inspiration this is a very important room and decorating it with your heart will pay off in more ways than I can tell ya.
Let me give you some example to look at to get you started…..
Here are 3 pictures I thought we could use to walk you through what you see. None of them make me sing and dance, but they can help me illustrate a few things for you to consider as you decorate. Keep in mind that sometimes it’s just one piece of inspiration that can birth a an entire design plan. It may be the accent pillow that pulls the bedding, color pallet and may even serve as the impact piece. You don’t have to love everything in the picture, but processing what you see, what is pictured and how the elements work together (or don’t) will provide information for your to custom make your own bedroom decorating plan.
Look at the colorful pop color bedding. This comfy bedroom has featured color for impact. Notice the use of solid bedding lays perfectly for the art to bring interest to life. Choosing a unique piece for a bedside table can bring interest to the room. Every space needs interest.
The yellow patterned bedding works in this room and doesn’t take over. Grid on the ceiling and the barrel shaded light fixture are extraordinary. Did you note the desk doubling as a bedside table? Lighting on both sides of the bed are very useful & add directional lighting. Take notice of the size & placement of the rug. It’s under the bottom third of the bed and covers the walkway.
This modern styling is clean and streamlined. Gray & cream bedding in front of warm colored window coverings mixes cool and warm colors beautifully. Not getting lock down but working the color pallet to create dimension is beautiful as well as impactful. The comfy chair giving a seating area with a view is always a win win. Working a busy rug with soothing solid bedding make a great pair. Can I say WOW about the ceiling light fixture. Lighting in the bedroom always gets my attention.
I am writing this blog in my chair tonight. Here’s are some pictures to share some of my bedroom where I decorated with my heart.
Sitting here looking out my window at our backyard makes me so happy. It’s about the chandeliers hanging in a tree, and landscape lighting filling the trees. I look out the window at night, and it looks magical. I love it that people describe our house from the road as the beautiful one with the chandeliers in the 100 year old tree.
Tonight, I sat my computer down to take a picture and am overwhelmed with such thankfulness. I dreamed of having a bedroom that I loved and enjoyed. For eight years, the walls were dark, and the windows were always covered, and that has given me an appreciation for what I see and the feeling that I treasure tonight.
- My color pallet being shades of creams & golds that harmonize make such great music. I favor the master bedroom having a paint color that is not found anyplace else in the house. Setting it apart on purpose gives it a high place & makes it special.
- One painted bedside table and a champaign mirrored armoire are perfectly paired giving me an eclectic and interesting contrast of furnishing finishes.
- A variety of textures in the bedding collection work together and are not too busy, flat, or boring.
- The seating for two and a variety of ways to turn the lights up or down provide what we need to read, rest & be restored & refreshed.
- The tall ceilings call for size and scale of wall hangings to match. These antique panels beside the bed were an awesome find. They pair with the canopy bed perfect in scale.
- I keep two diffusers in this room. One sits beside my chair and the other beside the bed. Because I know from personal experience, aromatherapy, improve emotional, psychological & physical well-being. I will always use the power of essential oils to bless & give, to live & love well.
My favorite place to listen to worship music and marinating in God’s presence is my bedroom. Here’s a song that has helped me focus on the first love of my life that gives way to all things good. I hope you’ll find a song that inspires you to cultivate the love affair of your life.
Enjoy the process. Keep your hearts focused as you decorate.
As we go… know that you are God’s masterpiece created anew in Christ Jesus so that you can do the good things He has planned and live the abundant life that He created you for! For His glory & your good live for His pleasure
